The Dangers of online anonymity
What is it all about?
-
Facebook has 2.7 Billion users
-
Snapchat has 249 Million users
-
Instagram has 1 Billion user

On each of these social media sites, people have created accounts for themselves, they run it themselves and they only talk to people that they know. But there are some accounts, a small minority, who are not who they say they are- or give no name at all. These users are called Catfishes, bots and trolls- and a lot of them often remain anonymous. Whilst online, people will often say things they would never say to a person if they were in the real world . The internet appears to provide a false sense of security for some, which allows people to think they can say whatever they want without any repercussions. This paves the way for Cyber bullying cases to occur. According to Dosomething.org. 'about 37% of young people between the ages of 12 and 17 have been bullied online. 30% have had it happen more than once.' Many of these Cyber bullying cases are carried out by anonymous profiles, and therefore never get bought to justice.
There are some horrific cases out there of people who have tragically taken their own lives due to the spiteful comments received online. The fact that there is no way to track an anonymous profile after someone has committed suicide is awful, and no one can be held accountable for the loss of life.
This is why there should be some form of extra level of security when making accounts. If there was an added level of passport verification to set up an account, then when the account got investigated you would be able to see who the account was registered to. The inclusion of this could help more people be held accountable for what they have done, and could potentially help with rehabilitation for people who are victims of Cyber bullying- rather than their suffering with fear that the accounts will pop up again.
